Media Media Media

The media industry in Pakistan has been growing like a wildfire. Every new channel is trying to push limits by showing exaggerated news, risque dramas and slapstick comedy. Indian dramas and sitcoms have penetrated through the airwaves and are now being aired on local channels. When is it going to be enough? Do you think this is the right path? Should this continue or should our media bodies do something about it? Are the media bodies doing anything at all?

  1. media is basically a tool to either store or deliver information/data. In Pakistan I believe its gone over bored!!!!!!!

  2. Just recently a news channel was actually generating hype about an issue that could have been downplayed. Whats sad is that these news channels are being watched around the world. They fail to understand the responsibility they have in showcasing Pakistan as the best country in the world.
Does America highlight the crime rate in New York or Chicago? Does UK highlight gang violence, Does France highlight rape victims? NO! Thats because they know what it will do to their image of utopia.

Learn my fellow brothers and sisters....learn to think and act smart! Otherwise we will also be like our Mughal ancestors and drown in our own imagination of content and security!

  3. I believe Media in Pakistan is being conflated with other cultures by the sitcoms and in broader terms few personalities are gauging it and tweaking it according to bent the mindset of the locals.
It is way more easier for media to influence the locals in Pakistan because the literates are few in numbers.

  4. Thats great Taha, but its like the Blood Diamonds debate man, the consumer has got to demand responsible journalism. I hardly know a soul who watches Express or Dawn News as much as I do, cuz its NOT INTERESTING enough. When it comes down to it, people here dont want news, they want a story, something to say, twist and exaggerate. Its in our nature. Either you change the way of the supplier or the customer. Who knows where the war of stupidity started? its like asking what came 1st - the phoenix or the flame? the chicken or the egg.
A circle has no beginning. So unless we have a long march (which would be exaggerated into a mob war after which the PD will shoot us down) demanding responsible journalism, you cant expect change. Dont get me wrong, id lke change, but people here love things the way they are.

  5. A good observation Baber.
Today, I was watching Geo, what a suprise...and was amazed to see how Kamran Khan keeps probing into different areas just to make hysteria and confusion. Thats what makes people glue on to such programs. Its a total STARWORLD scene.

  6. Media plays with the mind of the viewer. It tries to confuse the mind. It's like different channels are teams playing against one another saying one thing or the other.

The only sad part is that now people, a majority of us have stopped thinking and asking whether media could be just deceiving or creating different pictures. They just blindly believe whatever they see and hear.

But on the other hand I also feel as far as Indian softwares are concerned, most of the Pakistani audiences love watching such programs. And it's ok if good softwares are aired from time to time. But again being Pakistanis our media can go overboard by just forgetting whatever they could produce locally. I hope that does not happen.

  7. As far as sharing content on TV channels is concerned, I think it's not a bad idea. Its a reverse situation really, People in India prefer watching Pakistani drama's and people in Pakistan prefer the K fest drama's. Either way, globalization has hit everyone and everything so why not the media? What's the harm of airing Indian content on Pakitani channels? And honestly, I've been watching Pakistani channels for years now and I am of the opinion that our content is just NOT interesting enough.
